About Us
The WEMP Foundation is dedicated to supporting the mental health of our community. The pain of losing a loved one is a profound, impacting every aspect of life, from emotional and physical wellbeing to family dynamics, finances, work, and relationships.
Most of us have faced loss at some point in our lives, some have supported others through bereavement, while others have taken on the profound responsibility of guiding children through their grief. We understand that this journey has no shortcuts, even as societal expectations may pressure the bereaved to set aside their grief and move forward. Acknowledging the complexities of grief is essential, and honouring each individual’s unique process is crucial as they navigate the path toward healing.
This is why we have set up Bereavement Support HK. As Helen Keller poignantly reminded us, we are ‘not alone’. We offer comfort, support, and guidance to our community members as they navigate their immense sorrow and find their way back to a life of hope and healing.
“We bereaved are not alone.
We belong to the largest company in all the world
– the company of those who have known suffering.”
– Helen Keller

Who We Help
Grief affects individuals in unique ways influenced by their age, role, culture, and circumstances. It can manifest differently among children, families, caregivers, and members of the school community in distinct and complex ways.
Bereavement Support HK is dedicated to addressing these diverse needs by offering targeted support and resources tailored to help each group navigate their unique experiences of grief and restore their mental well-being.
Children
Children are often the most vulnerable when facing complex emotions like grief, making them particularly susceptible to the impacts of loss.
The loss of a grandparent, parent, sibling or friend can deeply affect their sense of security and understanding of the world. Providing support and guidance is crucial to help them manage their emotions, understand the loss, and begin to heal.
Tailored interventions and compassionate care can empower children to cope with their grief and gradually adjust to their new reality.
Families
A family’s approach to bereavement can significantly influence their collective and individual healing processes.
For parents who have lost a child, the emotional burden can be overwhelming, impacting their well-being and their ability to support their grieving children. Understanding how to navigate these deep emotional issues is essential for parents, guardians, as well as caregivers, enabling them to provide appropriate support while also addressing their own grief.
By fostering open communication and seeking tailored support, families can better manage their grief and work towards healing together.
Caregivers
The emotional toll of caring for a grieving child can be immense for caregivers. They must grapple with their own feelings of loss while providing stability to the child, which can lead to mental and emotional exhaustion.
It is vital for caregivers to recognise their own needs during these challenging times. Seeking support for themselves allows them to offer the compassionate care that grieving children require.
School Community
Members of the school community, particularly teachers and social workers, play a critical role in supporting grieving children. The need the ability to recognise the signs of grief and respond with empathy and kindness.
Effective support requires not only sensitivity but also access to the right resources and training. By equipping educators and counsellors with the knowledge and tools they need, we can ensure that children facing loss receive the guidance necessary to process their grief.
